CaRLA is excited to announce that, much like California, our team is growing with the addition of Greg Magofña and Luis Villa.

Greg Magofña, Director of Development and Outreach

Greg Magofña joins us as our new Director of Development and Outreach to bring his wealth of experience and knowledge around community engagement, housing policy, and activism. Growing up in two of the most expensive housing markets in the country — Hawaii and the Bay Area — Greg knows firsthand the importance of housing opportunities and good land-use policy in creating equitable opportunities for all.

Previously, Greg was the Digital Marketing and Communications Manager at Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency, an organization that works with and for homeless, formerly incarcerated, and/or low-income populations. In addition, he is one of the co-founders and Co-Executives of the social equity nonprofit East Bay for Everyone, once served as Senior Aide to former Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates, and has served as both a Berkeley Housing Commissioner and Environmental Commissioner. Greg has a Master of Urban Planning from the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy and a BA in Political Science from UC Berkeley.

Luis Villa, Board Director

Joining CaRLA as our fourth board member, Luis Villa is a San Franciscan who grew up in Miami and is married to and father of native Californians. He has watched both SF and Miami sprawl into sensitive wildlands and destroy lives through long commutes. For a change of pace, he’s excited to help CaRLA enforce California law and improve life for all Californians.

At work, Luis is an attorney and former programmer. His career has been focused on communities that make software that benefits everyone, including at Mozilla and the Wikimedia Foundation, and currently as co-founder of Tidelift. Previously, he served as a director at the Open Source Initiative and the GNOME Foundation, and advised a variety of other non-profits on technology and intellectual property licensing issues while working in private practice (both at Greenberg Traurig and as a solo).
